Oh Deer!

Oh Deer, this is more like home! After having spent a week in a large Canadian city, it is so refreshing to look out my window and see two White-tailed Deer approaching our feeder area. Not that we want them at our feeders, for we don't, but it seems their route across the road and on to the river seems to be the boundary between our property and our neighbours.
The special treat about this sighting this morning was that of seeing a White-tailed buck, which was easily identified by its antlers. I don't often see the male species of this deer.
Whenever I see a deer in our yard I always freeze into a motionless position (except for the pressing of my camera shutter) for I do not want to startle them and cause them to run haphazardly onto the street,(which doubles as a highway), in front of our house. These two I saw this morning however are not novices at crossing streets for both stopped and looked before taking that first step onto the road.Safely across to the other side they will make their way down to the river and browse through the stand of trees there. Perhaps I'll see
them again when I go on my morning walk.

I hope they pass this street-wise gene on to the next generation. In my days of driving in the foothills, large animals were always a worry, most especially the deer. No flashing of lights or horn honking could guarantee they would dash away from instead of in front of an appraoching vehicle. And that was just if you were able to see them first! I was fortunate and never hit one, but almost everyone I knew had. And moose encounters were usually fatal for all concerned!

What smart deer and I'm so glad they cross safely...this time! Mike has been seeing a deer at our apple tree again, but I have not seen it or had the camera...it usually comes after dark. He almost hit it coming up the road last night. Beautiful animals and your photos and the sequence are great!

We have a herd of deer in our little town too (Main Street is also a 2-lane highway), so I get to see them a lot, too. Like you, I freeze and watch them for awhile. It's lovely, isn't it? Ours are mostly mule deer, though a white-tail has been around this year as well. We get bear too...which I also feel blessed to see in my trees from time to time. Welcome home!
