Common Redpolls for Ruby Tuesday

The timing today was right on for the arrival of my first Common Redpoll of this winter at our feeders today. A large flock of Pine Siskins descended from the branches of a tall Silver Maple onto our feeder area and I immediately started to search the flock for a Redpoll. And I found one immediately, and then shortly after another. This is a male Common Redpoll . Both male and female have a redpatch on their heads, but it is only the male that has a rosy, red, streaked breast. This little finch is seen in our area primarily during the winter for it spends its breeding season in the northern boreal and taiga regions.

I think he's just the perfect candidate for a Ruby Tuesday posting! To check out other Ruby Tuesday postings, just click HERE, or click on the Ruby on the side bar. My appreciative thanks to Mary/the teach for hosting this site.

Now that's a great Redpoll photo - congrats! I recall one year in the foothills we had tons of them. We even had one lone Hoary Redpoll among them. It was neat because we thought we'd seen one or two lighter Hoaries before, but once we saw the real one, the difference was unmistakeable. I think the other light ones were just natural variations.

I have had a similar experience with Hoary Redpolls. I kept thinking that I might have seen one, but when I really did, I knew what I was seeing without any question. Its fun searching for the unique ones and I hope this is the beginning of a Redpoll invasion for us as there have been very few, either Common or Hoary around so far this winter. The last couple of days we have been experiencing a Pine Siskin influx, and that's fun too.

I just love these little birds! Their color is so pretty and the stripes just make them even cuter. I remember us having a conversation about them last year. I believe we were considering a swap of some sort :-) Just like with the waxwings this year. I thought of you immediately when my waxwings arrived after that wondeful post you had about the Bohemians!

That is a great looking bird, that I haven't seen. As I enjoy seeing cardinals set against the snow in the forsythia, this beauty would be just as welcome, the red complementing the snow very nicely. A beauty!

A beauty in patches of red around it's body. There's a look of wisdom on it's face as well :)

What a cute bird. But, if I will see it personally for the first time, I would surely think it was injured. At least now I know that it is the bird's real colors.

My RT post is here if you want to visit it. I'd be glad if you do. Thanks!

Your photos are always so wonderful! He's such a beautiful little guy and he looks cold to me. Your eagle shots are gorgeous as are the deer up above. I think those young deer were trying to look in your eyes and say "thank you for the food."
