Oh dear! Crossing Deer.

                           Two young fawns crossed the highway in front of our oncoming truck. they certainly gave me a front seat photo opportunity!

      What's a mother Deer to do when her young ones heedlessly cross a busy highway?  Just worry, worry! And hope that her  precious ,inexperienced ,young ones hurry, hurry!

                                                           Hurry! hurry!  hurry!!!!

                                                      Almost safely across to the other side!  

                                                          A leap for joy or a flying finale!

Fleecy Clouds for Skywatch Friday

Yesterday morning the clouds appeared to be hundreds of little wooly sheep all huddled together in the sky.  A bit of soild blue could be seen peeking through and in about an hour the fleecy clouds had dissapaited and only the solid sky blue remained for most of the remainder of the day.

Red Dominates the Roadsides for Ruby Tuesday Two

                                It seemed like a bit of a wait this year waiting for the much anticipated  colourchange of leaves to occur;but occur it did and the roadsides are now decorated with the beautiful hues of autumn.  It is an absolute visual delight to go for a drive through the roads of our woodlands.

Bird Alley Activity Today

A busyness has returned to Bird Alley with the approaching change of season.. this morning Pine Siskins and dull-coloured Goldfinch have rediscovered the niger seed feeder, replenished full of seed since yesterday morning.We also have a pair of Purple Finch frequently visiting Bird Alley as well as Chickadees.

  The prize appearance of this morning and also yesterday morning is this Red-breasted Nuthatch!  welcome little feathered friend!

A Banded Tussock Moth caterpillar for Mellow Yellow Monday

 This fuzzy yellow caterpillar with black spikey hairs is a Banded Tussock caterpillar found on an arm of a lawn chair on my back deck.

This is the second Tussock caterpillar I have seen within a week. The white caterpillar shown above is a Hickory Tussock Moth caterpillar.  You can notice a similarity between these two caterpillars as they both have black upright spikey hairs. I have read that this white caterpillar can be quite toxic and you should not touch it or pick it up. Some people have experience quite a severe allargic reaction from handling these caterpillars. I never touch a caterpillar but if for some reason I want to pick one up I always use a leaf or a small stick or twig for the caterpillar to rest upon.  Better safe than sorry so it is a good rule to be wary when encountering some of nature's unknown creastures.

Roosters, Dragonfly and Waterlily for Ruby Tuesday 2

 i do not know the species name for these handsome black and white roosters wearing their beautiful red conbs.  I saw them on this weekend past at the Kings Landing Historical  here in New Brunswick

I have found many delightful creatures within my favourite milkweed patch and this red dragonfly shown here was found there on one day last week.

This beautiful waterlily was found last Friday  in a small pond at St. Andrews , NB

A Soldier Beetle on goldenrod for Mellow Yellow Monday

This yellow Beetle was a new find for me last week. I found it in a milkweed patch.  If you want to see a variety of butterflies and insect life, then find and visit a milkweed patch. I always find such a visit interesting and rewarding! and be sure to take your camera with you!

A |Pine Warbler for Mellow Yellow Monday

This is the first warbler picture I have taken all summer.  I have seen very few warblers.  The white eye ring of this yellow bird suggests to me that it is a Pine Warbler! This warbler was seen in Bird Alley.

A caterpillar survival story for camera critters

An amazing survival story! I have been raising Monarch butterfly caterpillars  recently and I  now have 3 which have changed into beautiful jade green chrysalis.   I was a bit confused  though, as I had thought I had had 4 caterpillars. What had happened to the fourth one? ? Mystery solved!  My husband,David found it this morning when he found a chrysallis attached to the wall of our back sun porch when he moved some furniture away from the wall.  Perhaps the caterpillar had been mixed in with old milkweed leaves and got dropped as I was cleaning out the insect cage , replacing the old leaves with newer, fresher ones.  Luckily it didn't get thrown out with the garbage with the old leaves!Wow! What a neat discovery! Hopefully we can preserve and protect it until it changes into an adult Monarch butterfly! Hmmm... what about protecting it from the cat and visiting grandchildren? What a remarkable opportunity to study the chyrsallis up close!
August 2nd. update: This morning I noticed that the chrysalis appeared to look quite dark.  Looking closely up close I could see the folded wings of the Monarch butterfly within.  How beautiful.  I hope I am lucky enough  to see the chrysalis break and watch the butterfly unfold its wings!

What I find most pleasing about this discovery is that I had read that the caterrpillar attaches itself by weaving a silk-like mat to hang from.  In this picture we can see the white  attachment! How lovely!

sapsucker with red accents for Ruby Tuesday 2

I have featured this sapsucker before, but in this photo the red on its head and nape is so very red and intense that I thought it deserving of another mention.  This woodpecker species is very hard on our trees. You can see the holes on the branch that it has made to access the sap in the tree. This is a Russian mountain Ash that the sapsucker is feeding on.

We saw a White Pigeon!

When driving home past an old barn, at Central Blissville along highway #!01, last Thursday( July 19th, 2012), my husband said, "There's a white pigeon on the barn  roof!". I turned for a quick glance and when I saw it I said, "You have to turn around and go back so that I can get a picture of it". I got out of our truck and crossed to the barn side of the road and took a few pictures.  Then a very noisy vehicle came roaring by and all of the pigeons flew away.  I haven't seen the white one since.
