Deer on the highway

we have seen very few deer this winter as the snow has been so deep it is difficult for them to move around easily. However we saw this one yesterday running down the yellow line in the middle of the highway. We worried that it might encounter oncoming traffic, however none appeared and we breathed a sigh of relief when it decided to move onto the shoulder of the highway. a much better choice lady deer!

There was no oncoming traffic, but there was traffic behind the deer. We were following it on the shoulder and there was traffic coming behind us. We could not stop for fear that the traffic behind us would pass and hit the deer. Finally the deer made its own decision and jumped into, or onto, the snowbank of the ditch to our right. You can see the depth of snow on its legs in the photo as it jumped, but to live and run another day was its choice.

Seasonal changes in my yard and Bird Alley

A few days ago I posted this picture above showing only the wire holding a bird feeder which was buried under the snow.Since then, mainly this weekend past we have experienced rain and above 0 degrees C temperatures, and voila! alnost like magic, my green birdfeeder has reappeared!

And more magically work has been about and the depth of the snow underneath our blue house feeder has lowered considerably. I now have hopes that I might be able to manage a trip to bird Alley soon to refill our feeders!

And, Alas, all is not lost! This garden gate has made a reappearance from out of the snow. It could not be seen, nor any parts of it last week. I am taking the welcome on the gate personally and the season is now making me feel welcome again in my own back yard. Although there has to be a lot more dissapearance of snow before I can liesurely walk around freely out doors again, I am feeling greatly optimistic. I have even seen some green grass around the base of our two large old maple trees. Isn't spring wonderful in its anticipaton and arrival?! Yes! I'll be right back, I have to run outdoors to take a picture of the green grass!!

As promised!! Doesn't that green grass in the picture make your day? It does mine!
Before, the top of the feeder hanger crook is all that is showing in Bird Alley!
After, just see the difference in the depth of the snow now!!!!

How sweet it is: a sign of spring: pussy willows

It was a lovely bright, sunny morning and I had decided to go for a drive. Then I remembered the area that I was driving through was the location where I often found early pussy willows showing their fluffy white catkins in February or March other years. To prove my point I posted photos from the same location one year ago on March 3rd., 2010, You can see my previous post here: http://naturetales.blogspot.com/2010/03/finding-flufffy-whie-catkins-for.html Deciding to be more observant of the roadside bushes I was driving past, I looked out my side car window and it was then Isaw them! What a wonderful inspiring welcome sight! Yes, spring is on its way despite this huge pile of snow at the end of our driveway.(shown below)

Winter Conditions in Bird Alley

Its really hard to imagine that soon (I hope ) that I will be able to walk throuh Bird Alley and replenish my bird feeders with bird food. The feeder pole shown above has a feeder attached to it, but who could tell?It was there in the fall. it is buried under the snow!!!! The next picture shows the story of what has happened in Bird Alley. Here you can only see the wire to the bird feeder that is attached to the tree branch. Another story of a 'buried in snow' bird feeder.

This old cast iron water pump, shown above,a marvellous buy at a yard sale for $2.oo is not really used as pump but is standing on a 2x6 for decoration, and it doubles as a bird feeder when I sprinkle bird food in its spout, But Not this winterthough, the snow is too deep to get to it!

This blue house bird feeder above is no longer serving its purpose as a bird feeder ,but doubles as a shelter: for yesterday morning I saw a Tree Swallow sheltering under it I seldom attempt to venture into Bird Alley anymore as you can see from the picture above showing the partially opened gate there is so much snow. Too much!
These feeders in our back yard stand empty too!. Maybe next winter I should invest in a pair of snowshoes, but no, hopefully we don't have another winter that is as snowy as this one has been. I know spring will return for it happens every year? "Please hurry Spring. " I am waiting for you with open arms and have high hopes of greeting and feeding returning birds!

mostly black grackle for photo hunter

Today's photo hunter theme of 'mostly black ' provoked another memory trip to my photo archives. This is not a current photo , although the Common Grackle is often the first returning migrating bird I see at my feeders in the early spring. Probably 'I will have my first Grackle sighting in March. May it be soon! This photo shows an almost completely black Grackle with a whit tail feather. This is not a usual sighting. What fun it is to scan a large group of birds looking for something diffrtrnt among them. My camera clicks with joy at such a unique find.

Moving Deer for Thursday Challenge

My photo archives are a source of pleasure and memories. I have a lot of white tailed deer photos and the theme of this week's Thursday Challenge is "movement"; and I knew if I looked through my old photos I would find some photos of a deer photographed in motion. The picture displayed here is one of a male deer running into someone's yard after having crossed the highway. The beautiful set of antlers on this deer was a bonus! Seldom do I see a deer with antlers.

'movement', is this week's photographic theme for Thursday's Challenge. To view more photos posted on this theme, or to join in on the fun yourself, just 'click' on the highlighted name.

Spring Silhouette for Photo Hunter

When I saw that the theme for Photo Huntert today was 'silhouette'; I immediately thought of this picture I had taken in 2007. I had named it 'Budding Spring. I had filed it under my warbler bird groupings as I took it in an area where I find warblers each spring. You can see the swollen buds on the twigs and branch ends. It was taken in May 2007, just before the leaves came out. Won't it be wonderful when the leaves come out again? We have more snow forecast for our area again today. It has been a long , snowy winter. Enough already. I am winter weary!

A Robin sighting for Ruby Tuesday.

"Was out shovelling snow and the robin made a guest appearance in a nearby tree. February 7,2011"(Roger in Aidrie, Alberta)

My guest photographer, Roger . has done it again! He's taken a photo of a surprising bird sighting at his home location. What sight could be more heartening than seeing a Robin while shovelling snow?

Robins are red, winter skies are blue.

This picture makes me think of spring!

How about you?

Please send a few down our way, Roger. We are in the midst of another snowfall this morning and we had just gotten our driveway plowed out yesterday from our last recent snowfall, and we need an encouraging sign of spring!

Red breast of s Common Redpoll for Thursday's Challenge

Common Redpolls are the most frequent sighting at our feeders this winter. This one pictured above seemed to be putting on a show as if hanging upside down while holding on with one foot. I wondered if its foot was stuck among the vines above which are interwoven across the upper part of our pergola. But no disaster prevailed as it soon flew off to perhaps perform at another location. On with the show!

Red is the theme of today's Thursday's Challenge. To enter your own red-themed photo or to view what others have posted, please click on the small picture of my photo posted hereon the right hand column to find out how to contribute.

The cinnamon under tail which id's this waxwing as a Bohemian Waxwing can easily be seen in the above photo. And the source, , of the bird's attraction (the red berries) can be seen in the photo as well. This bird is featured on the header on this page as well. This species is a beautiful bird and always is a special sighting to me as it is not an often occurrence. Got snow today? We are waiting for it to start piling up later on today. Happy Groundhog day!. Let's hope for optimistic news regarding the prediction of spring's early arrival this year.

Bohemian Waxwings for Mellow Yellow Monday

Isnt this Waxwing beautiful with its yellow strip across the bottom of its tail feathers!?

We had seen these birds a week ago but I had forgotten to post the photos as there were too many other nature happenings to post about like: crows, snow buntings, hawks and eagles, etc..
The cinnamon coloured undertail shown in the above picture identifies the above Waxwing as a Bohemian Waxwing.

Hunting for Hawks

Yesterday we decided to go hunting for hawks along highway # 105 in the Maugerville, Sheffield area of New Brunswick. It was a good day to choose for the trees were very beautiful, with a frost coated covering, especially when the sun shone. And the first hawk sighting we had was of a light morph Rough legged Hawk. Its white belly really stood out when it was perched in a tree. It was quite a distance away but I had brought along my telephoto 400 mm lens and it proved to be quite an asset in our hawk photography yesterday. We considered we were off to a good start and so with high hopes we drove on down the highway.

When looking for hawks along this highway the thing is to look for a dark shape perched in a tree. Our second hawk sighting came right away, but as the sun was shining directly at my camera when I tried to photograph this second sighting ,making it difficult at first to id the hawk.We were able to get a better view as this hawk flew on down the highway and perched on a frost covered branch of another tree which reached over the highway. Were we happy? 'Yes!" Our day was proving to be quite successful! and we were able to take another picture of it! As it appeared to be so dark, we erroneously thought it was perhaps a dark phase morph of the rough legged hawk. Photo Shop proved us wrong.
After I downloaded and lightened the photo when back home we discovered. it was another light phase rough-legged as we could now see the white markings on its upper chest and lower belly parts. We were on a roll, on the look out for more hawks!. Already two light-phased Rough legged hawks seen! in just a very short time period! What next? There was more to come!

Continuing on down the highway we saw another dark shape in a tree off at a distance bordering the back of an adjacent field to the highway... Another hawk? perhaps. Shall we say hawk # 3? We then spied another dark shape in another tree which was closer to the highway and I was able to get some pictures of this other dark shape in the tree. But it wasn't a hawk!
We had suspected this second dark shape wasn't a hawk as it appeared to be quite large andalthough it did have white markings on it, but not like a rough legged's markings. It was an Eagle! please click to enlarge the picture below so we may share with you what we had seen. It was a magnificent sighting.Oh happy day! We were having a wonderful time! We drove on down the highway and turned by the bridge crossing the river there. We saw no more intriguing black shapes in trees around there and we decided to return to Oromocto to do our intended grocery shopping. On our return back up the highway, the Eagle we had seen was still perched there so we took more photos of it. It looked rather scruffy and rugged looking perched among the frost covered branches. Before we left the area we spied another dark shape in a tree as shown below.,. But another day might reveal what?! Our hawk sighting appetite had been appeased for the day? We hope you have enjoyed reading about and viewing pictures of our successful 'hawk and eagle day!'

Magpies from Guest Photographer in Airdrie , Alberta

Frequently this past fall and winter I have been receiving pictures of Magpies in my brother Roger's backyard in Airdrie, Alberta. They are a beautiful bird ,having a very striking appearance with their black and white contrasting plumage and long tails. Roger has been trying for good closeups of these birds over the past months., but they have proved to be rather elusive as subjects in their chosen yard. I think Roger's photo of the two magpies in the photo below is rather magnificent!
Below are Roger's observations of the visiting magpies:
"The magpies are becoming more confident as they visit and are less fearful?"

"There are two of them now, probably were all along as they all look alike."
This magpie above apparently likes feeding from the suet feeder Roger has provided for the bird visitors to his backyard.

Its really great to have views like this from your window!

Thanks for sharing Roger!

A Lone Snow Bunting

A telephone call yesterday afternoon from a bird watching aquaintance in the village alerted us to a bird she had not seen in her feeder areas before. From her description we thought it possibly was a Snow Bunting and we were right for with camera and bird book in hand we ventured to her home to investigate. The Snow Bunting was there where she had just spread some more bird feed and blackoiled sunflower seeds out on her driveway. The bird was not that timid as I got out of my car and it came right back where it has been checking out the food supply when we had arrived. There were no other SnowBuntings in sight nearby so it appeared that this lone Bunting had somehow gotten separated from the rest of the flock.
