I see a lot of female American Goldfinch gathering nesting materials at this time of year. Unlike most other bird species, the 
American Goldfinch does not begin nest building activities until late July or August. I think this is fluff of a Goatsbeard plant that the female goldfinch is collecting.

I've always wondered about their nesting. I never see young ones here....just adults both winter and summer. I don't even know what the little ones look like. Great photos of it with the mouthful of nesting fluff!

ReplyDeleteBoy, nesting in July seems like it's cutting it pretty close! Around here (near Point Pelee,Ontario and Windsor/Detorit) we're on our second brood of grackles! But I guess the finches have to wait for the thistles to bloom. Love the shots of them with their goats-beard "mustaches."
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen them at my feeders lately, and I thought they were probably busy. Nice catch. I don't remember ever seeing one with nesting material.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know they nested so late. But they don't migrate (around here anyway) so there is no big rush. Nice pictures.
