Evening Grosbeaks: for Camera Critters

I had been sitting upstairs at my computer when I saw a small flock of birds fly to the top of my neighbour's trees across the street from me. Rushing downstairs to get my binoculars to see what they were, just as I id'ed them they left, but then surprised me for they had circled around the back of my house and were waiting for me in our feeder area when I looked out the window again. I wait for these birds each year. They are visually exciting with their handsome yellow ski visors and black and yellow patterning.
Evening Grosbeaks; they arrived this morning with our first real snow storm of the season. I watched while the male fed on seeds from our Manitoba Maple and females fed on the crab apples from our Ornamental Flowering Crab Apple Tree.
I am sure they will be back for more!

My appreciative thanks to Misty for hosting this site. To see other participant's photo contributions just click HERE or on the Camera Critters logo on the side panel.

I got all excited when I saw your post title in my reader, and the gorgeous pictures surely did not disapppoint! ;-) they are just lovely. Haven't seen these guys around here yet, not since my days out west. Maybe I need to bundle up and head for the Pelee Park for better winter birdwatching. My feeders don't have enough habitat around them to make birds feel safe, I think. Just a tree, no bushes. Plus being right on the lake, many days it's too windy, and there's spray from the waves.

  8. Wow! They are beautiful with the snow falling. They are such a special treat to see. Do you see them on and off all winter? I only saw them for the first time in our garden in late summer.

This sighting was a treat today for these birds are wanderers, some times you see them, sometimes you don't. Last winter we saw them often, I hope they follow that same pattern this year. I do love it when they come to our feeder area. They seem to love feeding on sunflower seeds on flat surfaces.

I don't see many grossbeaks. I love that first shot where he is looking directly at you.

  20. I would love to have them back at my feeders. We did about 15 years ago, and then they left and never came back. Maybe they didn't like what I cooked for them. LOL
Your shots of them are beautiful.

It must have been a lot of fun watching them forage while it was snowing. It elicits a magical feeling.
