Usually this blog focus on a New Brunswick theme but I went a bit out of province for this Skywatch posting. While in the Montreal area last week there was a smog warning on Nov. 6th caused by the unseasonably mild conditions and at the end of the day I was able to capture this spectacular sunset.
My appreciative thanks to Sandy, Klaus, Ivar, Wren and Fishing Guy for hosting Sky Watch Friday .
Indeed spectacular sunset, great colour!
ReplyDeleteIt's incredible that smog can create a sunset this beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant in more ways than one.
ReplyDeleteMay be smoggy, but it is certainly beautiful. Even the row of electric wires adds to the beauty.
ReplyDeletebeautiful sunset! wonderful colors.
ReplyDeleteI can't detect the smog for all the wonderful hues of orange. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow...the color is spectacular!
ReplyDeletewhat a great collection of pictures you have here ! The 'rows of birds' are so cute and I know it is so difficult to catch them on camera, they are soooo quick!
ReplyDeleteThose are great sunset shots. And Montreal? If you'd said Swift Current I would have believed that, too; almost looks prairie to me.
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful photos. Smog or not. Helen
ReplyDeleteReally love that first one...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and deadly. Astonishing how often those two words are used together isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt's actually not the smog per se that creates this color, it's just that "something" in the air is reflecting all of the shorter wavelength light back toward the source. And the greater the distance the light has to travel, the more blues, greens, violets, etc are detoured between the light source and the receptor. So at sunset or sunrise, when the light has to travel the furthest, less of the blue/violet end of the spectrum actually makes it to us even in clear conditions, meaning the longer (red/orange) wavelengths are more prominent in the light we see.
Add in particulates like smog (or even water vapor) and even more of the shorter wavelengths are reflected, making the light even redder.
So yeah. A smoggy sunset is redder than usual. Which is a pity, because it truly is beautiful.
Brilliant colors.
