Recent Feeder Arrivals

I have been able to add three new species to my October Yard Bird list within the past couple of days. This one above, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, arrived yesterday and I did a post on it for Ruby Tuesday which can be found below this post.
This little Red- breasted Nuthatch was a very welcome sight a couple of days ago but it is proving to be very elusive! I have only this one photo although I did see it again yesterday, but the sighting was only for a second before it darted away again from sight.
I wonder how many can figure out what species this bird is if I don't tell you? Why I ask is that the first time I had seen one, about eight or so years ago, I didn't have a clue and had a difficult time figuring it out. I've been waiting for this species to show up so I could put it on my October Yard List count for they often stop by each fall en route to more southerly locations. Its a female Red-winged Blackbird and it really doesn't carry many look-a-like clues to its male counterpart does it?
And then what yard report would be complete with another mention of my four footed friend, the White-tailed Deer. I noticed it visiting again yesterday as I glanced out the windows looking over our back garden area.

It was back and it had spied the berries of the Mountain Ash tree.

See the red berries in its mouth!

  1. The female redwing is certainly well camouflaged, isn't she? And very pretty.

  2. Our winter Red-breasted nuthatches have returned and are quite unafraid of us. They love the peanut feeder and stay put for up to a minute at a time. I have never had your other birds (or deer) in my yard!

  5. Great carved pumpkins! Such talent! We just had some in the local paper carved by local artists and I'm amazed at what the talented can do with a pumpkin! I never was a good pumpkin carver. Happy Halloween!

  8. Great - and actually - the cool the males look with their red orange markings - overall I like the look of the female Red Winged Blackbird better!

How great that the deer decided to munch on some red berries for Ruby Tuesday! I'll bet you had to pay extra for that. (Just kidding, of course.)

I never would have guessed that was a female red-winged blackbird. Thanks for the lesson.

  15. That deer is so cute with the berries in her mouth. Such a good catch I've seen female RW-blackbirds many times, and each time I seem to wonder for a moment what it is.They just look so different.

  18. Forgot to add that I had a little red breasted nuthatch last fall for a while and he or she was so fast that all I have are blurry photos. You did much better than I did...
