A Cardinal Flower for Ruby Tuesday

I am always surprised each year when I discover these tall, beautiful, red blossoms for it is unusual to find wildflowers that are red. Cardinal flowers grow along the damp shores of our river and I find them growing there every July.

  1. These flowers are so stunning. They remind me of an Australian wildflower we call Kangaroo Paw!

  2. I found one of these last year beside a creek. I looked in the same place this year, but the water level was so much higher due to our rainy summer that it was not there. Your picture captures the colour and delicate flower well.

  5. I enjoyed the combination of the close ups and the ones in the water. Such a beautiful flower. The water photo is painterly, such an interesting composition. Love the way the light falls.

  6. A beautiful splash of red right when we need it most. Looks like something that hummingbirds would love. Lovely shots with the water behind them.

  13. Beautiful wildflowers. How great to know you'll see them every July.

I enjoyed the fox post below - his sweet little ears peeking out in the first shot is just perfect.

Really gorgeous flowers! I've not seen them growing wild, but did have a couple in a container in a shady spot on my deck, kept it well watered and it was happy. The rufous hummers went nuts!

  16. Wow! I never heard of cardinal flowers before but they are certainly well named. I made my own red flowers this week out of purple ones.

  17. Excellent find. They seem to like to have their feet wet. Lucky for them they are growing in a river!

I'm trying to think of some red wildflowers, and all I can come up with are wild poppies. These are lovely. Thanks for showing them to us for Ruby Tuesday.

  19. What stands out here is the red sprouting from the river. Used to seeing green vegetation in the water, not the red. It stands out when compared to those almost ubiquitous aquatic grasses.

    Nice view!

  20. I just love wildflowers! That red flower really is gorgeous! It's funny but there are a few flowering plants that used to be considered weeds when I was growing up and now I'm seeing them cultivated in Hawaiian gardens everywhere.
