Grass burning in the spring for Ruby Tuesday

Each spring people in my region burn grass and not exactly knowing why they engaged in this yearly ritual I did a google search and I found a most wonderful informative website by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources on the subject of myths and beliefs on spring grass burning and the actual truths of these assumptions. It is very worthwhile reading and very informative and can be found by clicking here

Happy Ruby Tuesday to all. Ruby Tuesday is a meme hosted by Mary, the Teach that celebrates red. To see more contributions to this meme or to share your own red for

The burning is thought to be a natural way of clearing. They use to do that a lot of controlled burning in the farm lands.
May be the rich nitrogen is one desired byproduct of the burning.

Thanks for the link, it confirms why burning doesn't happen so much here any more. That's a great photo of the burning grass - even if not the best practice.

This used to be common practice in the Appalachians. My neighbor who has since passed away would do it and I would be afraid the forest would catch fire but it didn't and then he was rid of the brush that might start a forest fire. I know it does have some benefits but it's also very risky.

I never knew grass burning was a tradition. Good article explaining all the myths and facts, and I bet it won't change anybodies practice of burning.
