C is for Common Yellowthroat: ABC Wednesday Round #3

I never have a problem identifying this male Common Yellowthroat Warbler for its black mask leaves no doubt as to what it is. Identifying the female is sometimes more difficult but on the day these first two pictures were taken the female was with the male flitting about in the trees and bushes along the railroad tracks. The female is lacking the conspicuous black mask but she has the same yellow throat as the male and also the same colouring in other areas.

Yesterday when I took this warbler's picture I was at first confused about what its identity. However, after having looked at photos of female Common Yellowthroats I think that is what it perhaps is, or better yet, I think it may be a first year juvenile of that species.

Beautiful photos Ann. I've never seen a live one. I was disappointed this spring when I came upon a roadkill. It was a gorgeous male.

Love the yellow throat. Nature is such a fine painter.

Wow, those shots are simply superb! And you're so right about birding this time of year. What with faded or eclipse plummages in some males, the always challenging females, and then the juvvies - yikes! These are wonderful!

That's the prettiest warbler I've seen yet! I love that black mask and the lovely yellow throat! Gorgeous bird! Do you think he knows it? The female is pretty, too...we don't all have to be flashy :-)

Beautiful pictures of a lovely bird.

Thanks for your comment on my California post - I like to know what something costs in advance and hate being suprised by extras added on. The idea of "tipping" is something I also find quite appalling. I guess one gets used to the way things operate in their own culture though and must adapt when in another's.
