Out and About at the end of the day: Pileated Woodpecker
I heard it before I saw it.I just let my eyes find the source of the sound!I haven't been using my 100-500mm lens as it is too heavy and my left arn cannot hold it very well to keep it steady.. I shall have to start getting back to it soon and try for more detail in my bird photos.
Its been an interesting birding day. Hopefully more interesting sightings await me tomorrow.

Beautiful bird and a great capture. In all my years I never have photographed one. thanks.
A wonderful bird, that I was lucky enough to see flying over the Ottawa River - it lives up to its cartoon image!
How fabulous that you can see that red crown on his head... or is it her head?
Great shots of the pileated! I love seeing them, but don't very often find one. Do you think one of those mono-pods might help with the long lens? Mike has talked about getting me one. I usually don't use a tripod at all, but my camera is heavy and sometimes I don't steady it enough.
Mary, I have a mono pod but when I walk with my cane everything else gets in the way. Most of my recent photos, like this woodpecker one, have been from my car window.

Nice captures. (I've also looked at all the photos on this page and enjoyed them so much.) I recall my unbridled excitement at spotting one of these shy birds (male) in the back of our backyard forest. I had no camera at the time, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the red head, and discovering it was not a giant red-headed woodpecker, upon looking up the photo in my bird book!
